We will hike 6.5 miles in Rutgers Ecological Preserve which is bigger and much hillier than you might think. In addition, we will go outside the preserve exploring Livingston Campus and buildings that remain from old Camp Kilmer.

Meet: 9:30 AM     Johnson Park Grove #1, Johnson Park Rd (Rt-807) Highland Park NJ 08904

From I-287 Exit 9 (River Rd toward Highland Park): Take River road (R-622) 4.6 mi towards Highland Park, NJ. Make a right when you reach Light at Cedar Lane into Johnson Park Road which is Rt-807. Proceed clockwise to the second parking lot (Grove #1) and use second entrance. [Close to toilets.]   GPS Meeting Place (40.5077, -74.4473)

 

Sunday      February 9, 2020        D&R Canal #2—S. Bound Brook to Blackwells Mills           Moderate

Hiking about 8 miles toward Trenton on the D&R Canal. Along the way we leave the Raritan River and pick up the Millstone River beside the canal. Ten Mile Spillway, Zarephath, and the Weston Causeway will catch our attention. Check out the 1835 Canal House at Blackwells Mills. A Swing Bridge for the road, allowed crossing the canal.

From I-287 Exit 17 Rt-206 south: Take Rt-206 south through the Somerville Circle about 7 miles to Rt-514 (Amwell Rd.). Turn left onto Rt-514 to Millstone, then right onto Millstone River Rd. Continue 2 miles to Blackstone Mills Rd. and turn left 1/8 mile to the parking area near to the D & R Canal Trail. GPS Meeting Place (40.4753, -74.5730)

From the Parking Lot: Turn left back to Millstone River Rd. Turning right (North) 4 mi to Manville Causeway. Turning right across the Millstone River and then the canal to Canal Rd. Turn left and drive on Canal Rd 3. mi northward to S Bound Brook. D&R Parking Lot is on the left, just at the start of the commercial area and before the junction with S Main St.

 

Sunday  February 16, 2020               Manaticut Point—Lake Sonoma           Moderately Strenuous

Today’s hike takes us thru and over some of the points of interest in the recently added Burnt Meadow section of Norvin Green. The hike is a moderately strenuous 6-7 miles with some pretty views of the skyline with a stop at overlook rock. If weather is cold and icy, micro-spikes are definitely recommended as some spots may be challenging to get through without them.

From I-287 Exit 55: Take Rt-511 (Ringwood Ave.) (Becomes Greenwood Lake Tpk.) north 4 mi and turn left onto Westbrook Rd.  Go west, across the reservoir, on Westbrook Rd. (left on Y) 2.4 mi to Magee Rd. on the right. Turn in and drive only 0.15 mi to Burnt Meadow Rd. on the left. Go on Burnt Meadow Rd. 1.0 mi to the second Crescent Drive sign on the left. Turning left go 0.1 mi to yellow blazed trailhead sign and large rock outcropping on the right. Park along road. GPS Meeting Place (41.0907, -74.3213)

 

Sunday      February 23, 2020    D&R Canal Walk #3—Blackwells Mills to Kingston Lock           Moderate

About 8 miles on the D&R Canal. Along the way on the other side of the canal is the large North Brunswick Water Works. At Griggstown is another ~1835 Canal House which was used by the Swing Bridge Tender and family. [Low bridge, everybody down, Low bridge cause we're coming to a town] Another old lock/new flow control is passed in this section on the way to the town of Kingston and the Kingston Lock. Meet: 9:30 AM     Kingston D&R Towpath Parking Lot, Kingston, (Princeton) NJ 08540

From I-287 Exit 17 Route 206 south: Take Rt-206 south through the Somerville Circle about 14 miles to CR-518/Georgetown and Franklin Turnpike. Continue to follow CR-518 (Washington St.) 1 mi. through town to light. Turn right at CR-603/Kingston-Rocky Hill Rd/Laurel Ave, continue 2 mi to light at Rt-27. Turn right and proceed 0.1 miles downhill to make a left (on a side road) into the Kingston D&R Canal Boat basin parking lot. If you cross the Millstone river you have gone too far.   GPS Meeting Place (40.3745, -74.6179)

From the Parking Lot: Turn Right toward Kingston and drive 0.3 mi to second light. Turn left onto Laurel Ave Rt-603 and drive north (Name changes to Canal Rd) for 4.9 mi to Griggstown Causeway. Turning left over the canal drive over the river to Millstone River Rd. Turn Right and Drive 3.5 mi north to Blackwells Mills Rd. Turning right proceed to the D&R Parking a short distance before the canal.
