Sunday      January 1, 2017     New Years Hike—Cold Brook Preserve           Moderate

Come shake out the Old Year with a moderate 4 mi. hike thru preserved farmland. The property was acquired from a developer by the New Jersey Conservation Foundation (IHC contributes to this group), and the 280 Acres were added to the Hunterdon County Park System, in 1984.

Meet:  12:00 PM  Cold Brook Preserve, 100 Old Turnpike Rd (Rt-517), Oldwick, NJ 07830

From I-78 Exit 24, Oldwick/Whitehouse. Proceed north from this exit on Rt-523 towards Oldwick. Continue straight on Rt-517 when Rt-523 turns to the right. After passing through the center of Oldwick, the park entrance will be on the left. A gravel parking lot is located on the right side of the driveway. GPS (40.6811, -74.7512)

Sunday      January 8, 2017         Jockey Hollow Exploration            Moderately Strenuous

On this 8 mi. loop around and thru the various historic places, we shall revisit in our minds the hardships of the Continental Army during the winter of 1779-80. It was during this “cruelest winter” that twelve men often shared one of over one thousand simple huts built in Jockey Hollow to house the army.

Sunday       January 15, 2017            Pequannock Knob                 Moderately Strenuous

This will be a 5+ mile winter hike to explore Mountainside Park that is new to us in the winter. (No berries) At the top of Pequannock Knob, benches invite a break from the climb up. To the left the New York City skyline can be seen on the horizon and a bench on the other side of the kiosk to the right overlooks the mountains of northern New Jersey.

Meet:  9:30 AM   Pompton Plains Shopping Ct; Rt-23 North &/or 190 Jackson Ave, Pequannock, NJ 07444

From the I-80, Rt-46 & Rt-23 Interchange: Take Rt-23 north 5.5 miles to Jackson Avenue (Right turn).  Enter from either Rt-23 or Jackson Ave.  Meet at north side of lot along Jackson Ave. (Stop & Shop nearby)

From I-287 Exit 52: Take Rt-23 Southbound 2 mi (4th light) to Jackson Ave. From right lane, make a jug handle (left) turn onto Jackson Ave eastbound toward Pompton Plains Shopping Ctr. Entering from Jackson Ave, meet at north side of lot along Jackson Ave. Meeting Place GPS (40.9689,-74.2839)

To Mountainside Park from meeting place: Mountainside Park, 240 Mountain Ave, Pompton Plains NJ 07444

Leave parking area and go West 0.6 mi on Jackson Ave across Rt-23 to Newark Pompton Turnpike. Turn right on Turnpike and drive 0.6 mi north to Mountain Ave on left just before Rt-23 interchange. Turning left go about 1.7 mi (passing under I-287) to a dead-end at the parking area for Mountainside Park. Watch out for stop signs! Park GPS (40.9710, -74.3257)


Sunday      January 22, 2017        Merrill Creek Circular         Moderately Strenuous

Today’s event is a nice level winter hike around the reservoir. Since it is too deep to freeze, waterfowl remain all winter. Bring your binoculars for the Snow Geese. (Unless they are out feeding on corn fields) 7 miles

From I-78 West Exit 4: Turn right at the end of the ramp on to S. Main St. and drive north 1.8 miles to the center of Stewartville. At the blinking light, turn right on Washington St. (becomes Stewartville Rd.) and go 2.7 mi to Rt-57 in New Village. Cross Rt-57 diagonally, turning left onto Montana Rd. which goes uphill for 2 mi. Left on Richlines Rd. and drive 0.3 mi, turning left again, onto Merrill Creek Rd. Follow signs to the Visitors Center. GPS (40.7428, -75.0873)

Sunday      January 29, 2017             Washington’s Crossing in Winter             Strenuous

This circular hike starts on the New Jersey side of Washington’s Crossing and then crosses over to PA. (We will use the bridge, not boats) Going north in PA, several historic places will be seen, including the Wing Dam in winter. We will then cross back to NJ at New Hope/Lambertville and continue south to our starting place. The loop is a flat 14 miles.

If there is snow, bring X-Skies and the hike will be adjusted accordingly.

From I-287 Exit 17 (Rts-206/202 south): Take Rt-202 south through the Somerville Circle, past Flemington about 24 mi to Rt-29 just before the Delaware Bridge. Go south on Rt-29 for 7.5 mi past Lambertville to Rt-546, (Washington Crossing Pennington Rd.) Turn right toward river (don’t cross) and go 200 ft to River Dr. Turning right (northward) onto River Dr. and continue 0.1 mi to park entrance. GPS (40.2972, -74.8682)
