Saturday    June 3, 2017       Exploring Flushing Meadows Corona Park                    Moderately Strenuous

In this walk we will explore the wonders of Flushing Meadows Corona Park.  We will begin at Jackson Heights, Queens and walk to the park stopping at a deli on the way to pick up lunch for a picnic.  You may bring your own lunch if you choose. The hike is approximately 10 mi in length at a steady, brisk pace.  Meet 9:15 for prompt 9:30 start at the SE corner of 75th St. and Roosevelt Ave.  Take the E, F, R, or 7 Train to 74th Street/Roosevelt Ave.  Joint with BTW      Rain cancels.

Sunday  June 4, 2017               IHC Annual Meeting and Hike                 Moderate or Moderately Strenuous

IHC Members only Please.  Come out for the annual meeting with an optional longer and shorter hike afterwards. Let us know what you liked, and possibly what needs improvement? Make your voices and ideas known.

From Suffern @ I-87 & I-287 Interchange Exit 15A: Take R-17 about 6.5 miles north to Tuxedo. Just past the Tuxedo train station, turn right on E Village Rd, cross the tracks and turn left into the large parking lot which is free on weekends. GPS (41.1956, -74.1841)

 

Sunday  June 11, 2017             AT Penn—Lehigh Gap to Little Gap                                          Strenuous

A long drive, but the views are worth it! First a Strenuous scramble at beginning of hike! Then look down on our starting point on the Lehigh River as the AT climbs to the top of the ridge. Find out what happened to all the trees (except the Sassafras trees). Look down at Palmerton, what was its history? Once on the ridge the climbing has ended and it’s on to Little Gap for a total of about 7 miles. Repeat of 11/5/2016 hike due to weather! Shuttle Required

Sunday             June 18, 2017               Lake Skannatati Circular North                      Moderately Strenuous

This hike is completely different from last month hike.  We will go North on the Long Path instead of South. Then we will use some other trails & then come back on the ASB.      Rain, or Foul Weather cancels this hike.

Sunday  June 25, 2017                     Rochambeau March to Yorktown                                  Moderately Strenuous

The National Park Service has marked one of the routes that Jean [-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de] Rochambeau and [General George] Washington used to march troops to the victory at Yorktown. We will follow this route through Middle Brook which was a winter encampments for the Continental Army. We will then hike to the Van Veghten house. About 1/3 of this 8 mile hike is on city streets, the remainder is 1/3 in the woods and 1/3 in a swamp.  Shuttle Required

Meet: 9:00 AM       Torpey Athletic Complex, 202 Nimitz Street, Somerville, NJ 08807.

From 1-287 South Exit 17, (Rt-202/206 South): Drive 1.5 mi to split of Rts-202/206. Take Rt-206 south from the Somerville Circle 2 miles. Look for right hand turn to jug handle towards Dukes Parkway East after passing over the Raritan River. Do not go on Dukes Parkway but U turn on Rt-206 to head North over the Raritan River and make first right onto South Bridge Street. Make third right on Southside Avenue (Next street after 4th street) and proceed 2000 feet to Nimitz. Turn onto and follow Nimitz to its end making a left and then a right (past ball fields and parking) into Torpey Complex Parking. GPS (40.5614, -74.5970)
