Sunday      September 6, 2020      South Sterling Ridge Trail Maintenance          Moderately Strenuous

Sterling Ridge needs some extra help on its southern section. Sara has obtained parking passes so we will start from the north and work south. We will car shuttle to the Visitor center. The hike is 2 miles to the fire tower and then 5.5 miles of clipping to the cars. Tools will be provided, however please bring work gloves.    Shuttle Required

Meet: 9:00 AM     South end of the Sterling Ridge Trail, 1561 Greenwood Lake Tpk (Rt-511), Hewitt NJ 07421

From I-287 Exit 55: Take Rt-511 (Ringwood Ave.) (becomes Greenwood Lake Tpk.) north about 11 miles to junction of Greenwood Lake Turnpike and East Shore Drive.) Parking is on the left side of the Road.   GPS Meeting Place (41.1400, -74.3280)

We will shuttle cars to Sterling Forest Visitor Center, 117 Old Forge Rd, Tuxedo Park, NY 10987    Shuttle GPS (41.1983, -74.2562)

Drive back (south) on Rt-511 2 mi to Margaret King Rd. Turning Left drive 2 mi to Sloatsburg Rd. Turn left and drive 2 mi to Sterling Mine Rd (CR-72) at traffic light. Turn left onto Long Meadow Rd (CR-84). Go north 3 miles to Sterling Lake Rd (Old Forge Road) on left. Turn left and go mi taking the next right toward the Visitor's Center which is mi ahead. The Parking will be opposite the Visitor Center in the hiker parking lot on right side of road.

Sunday   September 13, 2020  PA-Delaware Canal Hike #9—Lumberville to Tinicum Pk. PA   Moderately Strenuous

This section of about 8 miles starts by the pedestrian bridge across the Delaware. After inspection and photos, we return to restored Lock #12. Pennsylvania has spent $$ on lock restoration but are slow on path upkeep for bicycles. We hike northward past various Canal Artifacts and have nice views across the Delaware, and then we end at our cars. Shuttle Required

From I-287 Exit 17 (Rts-206/202 south): Take Rt-202/Rt-206 south and continue on Rt-202 about 13 mi to the Flemington Circle. Drive halfway around circle and take Rt-12 about 11 mi to Frenchtown and Rt-29. turn left and go one block to Bridge St. Leave Rt-29 and drive Bridge St to the Bridge to PA. Crossing over the river at the end turn left onto Rt-32 south. Drive 1 mi to Tinicum Park entrance and parking. GPS Meeting Place (40.5067, -75.0676)

Turn right out of park onto Rt-32 southbound and drive 8 mi to small roadside parking for lock #18 on left side. This is before the pedestrian bridge across the Delaware.

 

Saturday   September 19, 2020    Explore Rockaway, NY                  Moderately Strenuous

Travel on Rockaway Ferry from Pier 11 Wall St to Rockaway. It’s a very scenic ride & inexpensive and lasts an hour. Check out the beach and associated Food, Shops & etc. Then hike to Floyd Bennett Airfield and return to Manhattan by Bus & Subway. About 8 mi.

Sunday      September 27, 2020    The Timp from Jones Point                                 Strenuous

Experienced Hikers Only! High above the Hudson River is the Timp reached after a climb up the R-D trail and over Bald Mountain. Then we will stop on the top of the Timp. This is one of the greatest spots; it includes a dramatic 270 panorama. We return via the T-T, and the never completed Dunderberg Railway and tunnels, to the cars.   Rain cancels this hike.

From Palisades Parkway Northbound: Take Parkway to its end at the Bear Mountain Bridge Circle and Rt-9W. (About 18 miles north of New York State Thruway) Go south (right) on Rt-9W for about 4 miles to the parking area along southbound side of Rt-9W, opposite the old road to Jones Point.
