Meet: 9:00 AM Watchung Reservation, Trailside Museum, 462 New Providence Rd, Mountainside, NJ 07092

From Eastbound I-78, Exit 44 toward New Providence/Berkeley Heights: Turn left onto Glenside Ave. Continue 1.3 mi and turn right onto Watchung Reservation, Tracy Dr. Continue 1.3 mi. At the traffic circle, take the 1st exit onto Summit Lane. Continue 0.4 mi and turn right onto New Providence Rd, then Continue 0.2 mi to the parking lot of Trailside Nature & Science Center.

From West bound I-78, Exit 43: Proceed right on Diamond Hill Rd. to Traffic Light and turn right onto McMane Ave. Go on ¾ mi to intersection of Glenside Ave. and turn left. Continue ¾ mi to Watchung Reservation, Tracy Dr. on right. Continue to the first circle and take first right onto Summit Lane. Go ½ mi and bear right onto New Providence Rd. to the end. The Trailside Parking is on right.

From Garden State Parkway Exit 140 (Rt-22): Take Rt-22 west about 4.3 mi to Summit Rd turn right and continue 1.2 mi to Summit Lane. Go 0.7 mi and at the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit onto Summit Lane (Boro of Mountainside). Continue 0.5 mi and bear right onto New Providence Rd. to the end. The Trailside Parking Area is on right. (GPS 40.6826, -74.3728)

 

Sunday      June 9, 2023               Merrill Creek Circular          Moderately Strenuous

We will start promptly at the Merrill Creek Visitor Center and circle the reservoir clockwise. The Perimeter Trail is approximately 6 miles long. If we are lucky, we will see the resident Bald Eagles give us an aerial show. We will pass the Spring House as well as an old Lime Kiln near the end of the hike.There is a portable potty at the beginning, and about the halfway point. The trail is mostly flat with one section where there are roots, hills, and the possibility of some mud.

From I-78 West Exit 4: Turn right at the end of the ramp on to S. Main St. and drive north 1.8 miles to the center of Stewartville. At the blinking light, turn right on Washington St. (becomes Stewartville Rd.) and go 2.7 mi to Rt-57 in New Village. Cross Rt-57 diagonally, turning left onto Montana Rd. which goes uphill for 2 mi. Left on Richline Rd. and drive 0.3 mi, turning left again, onto Merrill Creek Rd. Follow signs to the Visitors Center road on the right.. Turnoff to Viitors Center Parking Lot (GPS 40.7429, -75.0872)

 

Sunday      June 16 2024              Schooley’s Mountain                  Moderately Strenuous

This will be a 7-mile hike into and up Schooley’s Mountain. We will see the new set of stone steps that Morris County installed next to the waterfalls. We will be hiking a section of the Patriots Path today. Several steep sections. Bring Poles.

From I-80 Exit 27 (Rt-206 South): Continue southward on Rt-206 about 7+ mi to the Chester area at the light for the intersection of Rt-513/ (Rt-24). Turn right (west) onto Rt-513/(Rt-24) and continue 3.6 mi to the Gillette Trail Parking lot on the right. GPS (40.7843, -74.7661)

 

Sunday      June 23, 2024             Hamburg WMA      Moderately Strenuous

This moderately difficult hike, in the very lightly trafficked Hamburg Mountain Wildlife Management Area, starts at Silver Lake and follows unblazed woodland trails and fire roads. There are a few small stream crossing and nice views of lakes and woodlands trails. A communication tower, along the way, has views, for hikers, of Pochuck Mountain Ridge and Hamburg valley.

From I-287 Exit 52: Take Rt- 23 north 16 mi to Silver Grove Rd. (Rt -625) on the right. (Small road sign) Turning right drive 0.1 mi to Silver Lake Rd. on the left. (Small road sign in trees) Make a Left and continue 0.2 mi, to split. Bearing left, still on Silver Lake Road onto the gravel section, continue 0.8 mito the Parking turn-in on the right. Dive in to Parking Lot by the Lake. Note! Sunday     June 30,2024            Berkshire Valley to Saffin Pond       Moderately Strenuous

This hike involves a shuttle. Meet at Saffin Pond Mahlon Dickerson, then drive around to our starting point on Berkshire Valley road and hike back. 10 Miles with a rocky steep start. One significant water crossing and then we are into Mahlon Dickerson from a part we seldom hike. Lots of pretty streams and one large lake with an impressive Beaver Hutch.
