Sunday      October 1, 2023              Schooley’s Mountain             Moderately Strenuous

This will be a 7-mile hike into and up Schooley’s Mountain. We will see the new set of stone steps that Morris County installed next to the waterfalls. We will be hiking a section of the Patriots Path today. Several steep sections. Bring Poles.

From I-80 Exit 27 (Rt-206 South): Continue southward on Rt-206 about 7+ mi to the Chester area at the light for the intersection of Rt-513/(Rt-24). Turn right (west) onto Rt-513/(Rt-24) and continue 3.6 mi to the Gillette Trail Parking lot on the right.

Sunday     October 8, 2023           Trail Maintenance Schunemunk           Moderately Strenuous

The club maintains this section of the Western Ridge trail (the previous Long Path), as well as the Lower Jessup Trail. Please come and help us maintain these trails! Bring your lunch, water, clippers and good working gloves. If you do not have clippers, you can use the tools provided by the club.

From I-87 Exit 16 Harriman/Woodbury Commons: After tollbooths continue straight westward 3½ mi to Exit 130 (Rt- 208).

Turning right drive 2.8 mi following Rt-208 Northward, then at mini-mall, turn right onto Clove Rd. Continue on Clove Rd. 4.4 miles, then turn right onto Otterkill Rd. Drive 0.8 mi, the parking lot is on the left. Meeting Place GPS (41.4256 -74.1015)

 

Sunday     October 15, 2023            Red Bank to Battery Lewis         Moderately Strenuous

This hike is approximately 8-9 miles from Red Bank NJ, through the town of Rumson and then Hartshorne Woods to Battery Lewis, where you can see the old WW2 cannons and views of the river and ocean.  This is a shuttle hike.

Meet: 9:30 AM     Rocky Point Entrance of Hartshorne Woods Park, 1402 Portland Road, Highlands NJ. 

 

From Garden State Parkway South Exit 117, Rt-36/Sandy Hook. Proceed toward Sandy Hook on Rt-36 about 14 miles to the light at Miller St. on the right. (Large Church on corner.) Turn in and go 1 block to Highland Ave, Turn left and go 1 block to S Peak St on right. Turn in and go 1 block to intersection with Grand Tour on right. Follow Grand tour 0.4 mi turn onto Portland Rd and the Rocky Point Entrance of Hartshorne Woods Park. Park near the restrooms. GPS (40.3910, -73.9889)

Those coming from NYC should meet at the NJ Transit station in Red Bank and contact leaders for time and transport information.

 

Sunday October 21 to 28, 2023         AT Hikes—North Carolina—Hiking Week          Strenuous

The hikes along the AT, will be picking up from Watauga Dam. We expect to complete the AT through Damascus Virginia. Contact leaders for more information, mileages and the date of the hike.

Sunday  October 29, 2023              Popolopen Torne, Fort Montgomery, NY                 Moderately Strenuous

Following historic 77/79 trails, we will ascend Popolopen Torne. This trail requires some technical rock scrambling in parts. The summit offers 360-degree views of the Hudson River, Bear Mountain and Bear Mountain Bridge. We will return along the scenic Popolopen Creek and will end exploring underneath the Bear Mountain Bridge & Historic Fort Montgomery on the way back to the Parking area. About 8 miles in length.

Take the Palisades Interstate Parkway: North to Rt-9W traffic circle near Bear Mountain Bridge (about 18 miles north of NY State Thruway). At the circle junction go north on Rt-9W about 3/4 mi across Popolopen Bridge (0.3 mi past Fort Montgomery entrance) to “Additional parking” lot just off of the viaduct on the east side of Rt-9W.
